Founded in 1924 in Vienna, Austria, by Dr. Emil Froeschels, the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) is the oldest international organization working from a global perspective on scientific, educational and professional issues affecting persons with communication, language, voice, speech, hearing and swallowing disorders. IALP’s mission is to provide a network that enables those concerned with communication sciences and disorders to work together and enrich their understanding by providing an opportunity to situate their work within broad multicultural perspectives. This expanded vision serves to enrich on behalf of individuals with communication disorders and reduce geographical and political barriers to the highest levels of scientific inquiry and services.

Through its meetings and publications, IALP provides a venue for sharing recent research findings, educational and professional advances, and public information. Members of IALP work in over 57 countries and come from every continent around the world. IALP works closely with the 58 Affiliated Societies that comprise its world-wide partners. IALP also has consultative status with the United Nations and works in association with the UN Department of Public Information.

The Taiwan Speech, Language and Hearing Association (TSLHA) has been an Affiliated Society of the IALP.  Members of the TSLHA have attended the IALP Congresses over the last 25 years.  Representatives from TSLHA were present at the 2010 IALP Congress in Athens, Greece. TSLHA has representation in the Education Committee of the IALP. The 2013 IALP Congress will be held in Torino, Italy and the 2016 IALP Congress will be held in Dublin, Ireland.
